SAINT GABRIELS MATCH REPORTS SECTION 2009 SEASON

We hope to bring you as many match reports for all our age groups. Many thanks to our reporters!

U11'S STILL GOING STRONG DESPITE WEATHER

Saint Gabriels u11's played monivea/abbey on thursday 12/11/09 in kilconnell pitch. This was a great game and all players involved should be congratulated both home and away.  Well done to all of our u11's who coped superbly well with the slippery conditions after a very wet day which made for a very greasy ball even though the match was played in decent weather for a change!!!. St Gabriels had a great first half start and stormed ahead with a score of 1g & 4pts.  Saint Gabriels were leading 1g 4pts to 1g 1pt at half time and were well worth the lead. A re-invigorated Monivea/Abbey came out in the second half with fire in their belly's and played some fantastic football which St Gabriels did well to keep pace with. The away team then went ahead by  2pts with some great points scored, but all this did was to gel a St Gabriels team that fought back strongly and made the game have a grandstand finish with the home team winning by 2 pts. A fantastic game, a fantastic result, a fantastic team!!!
Good Luck on Sunday 15th November v Annaghdown.

SAINT GABRIELS V HEADFORD

Jimmy Connelly's St Gabriels junior c team played Headford on sunday morning in kilconnell pitch on 17/10/09. St Gabriels got off to a flying start and went on to score some fantastic points but Headford came back strong and took the lead and at half time the score was Headford 1g and 6pts in the first half to St Gabriels 4pts. In the second half St Gabriels came out fighting and began to gain a foothold in the game and indeed were the better team and scored 1g and three points with Headford scoring two points. Tommy Shea scored a good goal and put us back in the game but St Gabriels couldn't put the scores on the board to try to level with Headford try as they might and unfortunately St Gabriels lost. Well done to this panel of players for their efforts throughout this season. well done to the manager and mentors also.

JIMMY'S JUNIORS COME OUT ON TOP !!!!

St Gabriels junior c team played kilkerrin/clonberne on Friday evening in clonberne.
The game started at a great pace with st gabriels the better team but not putting the scores on the scoreboard. St Gabriels scored 1g 2pts and were in control of the match and kilkerrin/clonberne came into the game and at half time the score was st gabriels 2g 4pts to 1g 2pts to Kilkerrin/Clonberne. In the second half kilkerrin/clonberne upped their game and came back to within 1pt of st gabriels but st gabriels held on and scored two more points to go on to win the game. Final score
st gabriels 2g 6pts to kilkerrin/clonberne 1g 7pts. This gives St Gabriels a well deserved place in the quarter finals. That will be played against Headford on Sunday morning 18/10/09 in Kilconnell pitch at 11.30 a.m. Best of luck to st gabriels team and many congratulations to a fantastic seasons finale.

U12's TRUE GRIT IN MONIVEA
St Gabriels U12 A team played monivea/abbey on thursday 24th of september in Monivea. In what was a very exciting game which saw a rampant Monivea side who seemed to come out of the traps much quicker than St Gabriels clock up some good scores and the away teams manager had his work cut out at half time as St Gabriels were losing by 10pts in the first half. A stern but encouraging team talk and in the second half a rejuvinated and re-organised St Gabriels came storming back putting Monivea on the back foot throughout the half and they came back with some excellent scores and attacking football which was free flowing and seemed to have Monivea defending for the entire half! St Gabriels knew they had to go for it and came back to within 1pt of Monivea/Abbey and then fortunately for Monivea/Abbey they got a goal against the run of play and went four points up. Other teams may have folded at this point but this St Gabriels team found a new lease of life and still fought back and brought it back to two points. But with time running out all of St Gabriels second half endeavour was to no avail and they narrowly lost by two points. Well done to the panel of players for their commitment and entertainment given over the past year. Thanks to Mike Malone and Bosco Riddle for their time and dedication all year to this panel of players.

JUNIOR C SHOW METTLE IN CHAMPIONSHIP VICTORY

St Gabriels Junior C team played in the first round of the championship (football) against kilkerrin/clonberne in menlough on saturday 8/8/09. On a lovely evening kilkerrin/clonberne looked the much stronger team and after much tooing and froing in the first period with gabriels putting 1g 3pts on the board by half time kilkerrin/clonberne had managed to score 1g & 6pts to take a 3 point lead into the second half. In the next half st gabriels fought hard to get level with Kilkerrin/Clonberne and began to gain the upper hand which showed that all those hours on the training pitch really do pay off!!. With a great goal from d.mcloughlin and eventually with a great point from kevin mcdonagh st gabriels levelled the game with the match ending st gabriels 2gs and 6pts to kilkerrin/clonberne 1g 9pts in normal time. Extra time was played and saw the ascendancy of an improving st gabriels who looked the fitter team and they scored 5pts in extra time to kilkerrin/clonbernes 2pts. Final score at the whistle ended st gabriels 2g 11pts to kilkerrin/clonberne 1g 11pts. The game was a very entertaining match for supporters and was a great credit to the manager Jimmy Connelly and to the panel of players on such a great performance. JUNIORS MATCH ST KERRILLS TO MAKE A POINT

juniors in recent action in tuamSaint Gabriels junior c team played St Kerills in a league match in kilconnell pitch on wednesday 6th of august 09. A really good game of exciting football ensued and St Gabriels had most of the possession in the first half but unfortunately could not convert their scores. The half time score was St Kerills 1g 2pts to St Gabriels 2pts. The second half saw a terrific period of play which saw St Gabriels more clinical in front of goal scoring 4 unanswered points. But this was not to last and St Kerills found their scoring boots again and replied with a goal and a point to stretch ahead but an irrepressible St Gabriels scored 3 points to level the match with a score of 9pts to st gabriels and st kerills 2g 3pts.

UNDER 16's EARLY PROMISE IN RENMORE

This was a game that saw a fantastic start against St Gabriels nemesis Clifden in a neutral venue played at an extremely fast pace. ST GABRIELS u16's brought the game to a very strong Clifden side who had triumphed over them some weeks previously in Pearse stadium in the League final. This was the quarter final of the championship and St Gabriels got off to a great start scoring 5 pts to clifdens 1pt. Clifden fought back and scored two quick goals and were 4pts in the lead at half time.  In the second half clifden playing with the wind seemed to get the upper hand and just seemed to have to much in the locker for gabriels and won the match.
Thanks to Robbie Keane manager and Padraig Donnellan and Ian Murray & Shane Dolan  for their commitment and dedication to this team over the year. Thanks to the u16 panel of players for giving us great entertainment for the year.

FANTASTIC FIRST HALF PERFORMANCE IN PEARSES

St Gabriels u16’s played the league final in pearse stadium against Clifden on Friday 26/6/09. In lovely sunny conditions St Gabriels played great football in the first half especially for the first 20 minutes were they quite literally bossed the game but were perhaps guilty of not taking their chances and although they were only three points behind clifden at half time they should really have pressed home their advantage to give themselves a cushion going into the second half, as it was they knew they would have to be more clinical at the turnaround. Jonathan Creaven had a phenomenal game and put over some lovely points and St Gabriels were unlucky not to get a goal in the first period indeed Clifden took some time to find their feet. In the second half St Gabriels got a penalty only to have it saved by a great save by the Clifden goalie. St Gabriels had the ball for long periods but could not convert the scores Dylan Murray on one occasion making a fantastic recovering run to stop a definite Clifden score. Clifden went on to have a good win but this left St Gabriels to rue their missed opportunities during the match and make them more determined to win their Championship match against Glenamaddy with the winner to play Clifden!!!!. Final Score St Gabriels 1g 7pts to CLIFDEN 18pts. Scoring for St Gabriels team were man of the match A. Loughnane 1 g J. Creaven 4pts, P. Claffey 1pt,

D. Murray, 1pt D. Glennon 1pt. Manager Robbie Keane commented to the players " I was extremely proud of the display you gave. The football you played was of a high standard and the scoreline did not reflect that. A couple of decisions did not go our way but I think we played the better style of football and deserved to be a lot closer at the end if not to have won the thing. Lads we have to lift our heads right now and set a goal for ourselves and that is to reach a championship final . We'll worry about winning it when we get there! Lads lots of work between now and then and one game at a time." Well done to this great panel of players they are a credit to St Gabriels. Thanks to Robbie Keane, Manager and Mentors Ian Murray, Shane Dolan and Padraig Donnellan and Brian Glennon for all their hard work and commitment to this great panel of players. Thanks to Brodericks bar for refreshments provided to the team and thanks to Neil Evason for the lovely colourful T-shirts and caps provided on the day for all the supporters. Thanks to all our supporters for travelling and cheering on the u16’s. We now turn our attention to the championship and need to concentrate on the job in hand, this group of lads has great potential and has another final in them!!!

GOOD AWAY DAY IN SUNNY MONIVEA FOR ROBBIES BOYS

u16 squad v killanan

St gabriels u16’s played Killanin in the league semi-final in Monivea on Sunday 21/6/09 and earned themselves a place in the u16 league final after a great game of football. Killanin started the better side but didn’t put scores on the board, St Gabriels seemed to take heart SUBS BENCH!!!!!from this and slowly tightened their grip on the game. In the first half St Gabriels then took the game to Killanin and played some great football with Dylan Murray & Paul Claffey outstanding in the first half and with great support play from Johnathan Creaven and Gary Lohan they could possibly have registered some more scores to press home their advantage.  The half time score was St Gabriels 7pts to Killanin 1g 1pts- Killanin started the second half with a great opportunistic goal which levelled the game this seemed to unsettle St Gabriels for the next 10 minutes and if not for some great defending by Brian Quinn & David Shaughnessy amongst gary lohanothers St Gabriels appeared to be on the backfoot and withstood an onslaught from the Killanin forward line, the game ebbed and flowed then with each side giving their best to come out as winners. St Gabriels Liam Maguire scored a great goal and Gary Lohan helped finish a goal to the back of the net which seemed to deflate the opposition and their initial impetus from their quick fire goal after the break evaporated and both teams were evenly matched. In the final few tense minutes another series of Killanin attacks were snuffed out by recent substitute Aidan Connelly and a special mention for a great spectacular one on one save earlier in the match from unsung hero Cormac Dolphin St Gabriels goalkeeper. Great points from the ever reliable Christopher Donnellan and good points from Johnathan Creaven and Alan Loughnane all helped to secure a place in the final. Killanin SPOT THE BALL COMPETITION!!!were left to rue their earlier misses and for a team to score four goals in a semi final and not progress bears testament to a good defence who pressurise attackers and to a clinical St Gabriels forward line who played with great determination and coolness to boot. Credit to the panel of players and manager and mentors for their commitment to their game. Team manager Robbie Keane said after the game "We owned the ball for much of the first half, but did not convert the scores. We knew at half time that we did not have enough of a cushion between us and ROBBIE KEANE u16 managerthat they would come out at half time and throw everything at us which they did. I was impressed by the way our lads kept their composure and did not panic when they got the goal and the penalty. We kept chipping at the scoreline, we got the rub of the green at the end, but you create your own luck. We are sixty minutes away from getting our name on a cup, a goal we aimed for all year. I could not say enough good things about these lads!" Scoring for St Gabriels were G. Lohan 1g L. McGuire 1g 2pts A. Loughnane 1pt, C. Donnellan 5pts  J. Creaven 3pts. Thanks to all the St Gabriels supporters that travelled to support the team. A great crowd and atmosphere helped them on their way.

FINAL SCORE st gabriels 2g 11pts to Killanin 4g 4pts.

JUNIOR A BEATEN IN CHAMPIONSHIP BY BALLINASLOE

junior A do the huddle!!!!!!!!!!!!St Gabriels Junior A team played the first round of the championship in Tuam stadium on Sunday evening 21/06/09 against St Grellans of Ballinasloe. A fine support was mustered into Tuam Stadium from both sides and with the weather superb for football the large crowd settled down in anticipation of a great game of football and the first half didn't disappoint. In the first half St Gabriels looked the better team and settled well with good powerful running from across the team, in the first fifteen minutes they gained good possession of the ball and were perhaps guilty of too many wides, if these had gone over then the half time score would have had a different complexion on it, as it was Gabriels were only a point behind St Grellans. HALF TIME SCORE-ST GABRIELS 5PTS AND ST GRELLANS 6PTS. In the early minutes of the second half St Grellans got of to a great start and reacted quicker to the ball and got a goal and a point and never looked back after that as they begun to turn the screw on a St Gabriels team whose early first half promise never materialised in the second period of the game.Although some individual good performances from the likes of Malone & Finn on the day the team from Ballinasloe just seemed to have an extra gear when needed and they won on a scoreline of st gabriels 9pts - st grellans 3g 11pts. A special mention and a well done to all the st gabriels panels players and manager, trainer and mentors for their commitment to the game all year. Many thanks also to the supporters also on the day. Scoring for St Gabriels  P. Finn 3pts. D. Hardiman 1pt, T. Tierney 2 pts P. Dillon 1pt.  S. Whyte 2tpts.

MATCH SUMMARIES - U14's BEATEN BUT UNBOWED!

Saint Gabriels u14's squad played Clarenbridge at home in Kilconnell on friday 22/5/09. Clarenbridge were the stronger team and were leading at half time. St Gabriels had some great scores and worked very hard but were beaten by a better team. The whole team must take heart from this performance and ultimately will benefit from such a good workout against a very accomplished team. This match was played a few days after Saint Gabriels u14's played St Kerrills in Gurteen on tuesday 19/5/09 and were up against a very strong home side but battled well, numerous good individual performances were the order of the day and it is pleasing that certain players are developing into very good footballers indeed. In these games and at this age level performance during games should be seen as a measure of success and it is not always the final score that reflects this.

St Gabriels despite the conditions were too strong for the opposition and won on a scoreline of St Gabriels 1g 7pts to St Kerills 8pts. Scoring for St Gabriels was B. McLoughlin 4 pts,  J. Garvey 1pt, J. Claffey 1pt, A. Lohan 1g, C. Finn 1pt. Thanks to Pauric Collins for refereeing the game.

St Gabriels u16s travelled to Kilererin and were put through a rigorous warm up session by Shane Dolon whilst they waited for the Kilererin team to gather, they had a great workout and were well loosened up by the throw in. A good game ensued with both sets of players not shirking any tackles and the quick pace of the game played by St Gabriels players during the game in particular Dylan Murray & Aidan Connelly who caught the eye caused problems in the first half for the home team with Ronan Kelly & Tiernan Keane particularly busy throughout the game, indeed the difference between the teams only began to tell in the final quarter of the game when Gabriels conceded a goal almost immediately after scoring themselves courtesy of the perennial Paul Claffey and this appeared to take the wind momentarily from their sails and the back line did well to contain some very physical & large!!! Kilererin forwards for so long. St Gabriels lost out to Kilererin on a scoreline of St Gabriels 1g 7pts to Kilererin 3g 8 pts.

 MINORS MATCH REPORT 03/03/09

ST GABRIELS Minor team played Ballinasloe in a home challenge match on Tuesday 3rd march 09 in Kilconnell pitch.  It proved to be an extremely good workout for Seamus Coughlans Panel and the team took to their task with relish. Saint Gabriels immediately started the match forcing their game upon Ballinasloe and indeed were the better of the two teams in the initial stages and it wasn't until the second half that Ballinasloe found any sort of rythm to their passing game and got back into it in the second half but having said that Saint Gabriels finished the match very well and indeed had too much guile for their opponents. Final score was 1 goal & 4 points to Ballinasloe to St Gabriels 9 points. One thing to note was the impressive turn out of the Gabriels minor panel which saw 26 togged out for the match. Well done to all.

 JUNIOR MATCH REPORT 01/03/09

Jimmy Connelly’s Junior team played against Athenry in Kilconnell in a challenge match on Sunday 1st of March 09. All the panel of 30 players got a run as no less than three different St Gabriels teams took to the pitch during the game! This challenge match gave the management team the opportunity of giving all of their panel time on the pitch and a chance to see how the players had coped with the rigours of last season as there were three parts to the match each of 20 minutes. All the panel showed great endeavour in ideal albeit cold conditions for good attacking football and again it must be noted that there was great support and a turnout of 30 of the panel on the pitch bodes well for the future. Final Score st gabriels 1-5 athenry 1-8
